PRE-FEST EVENTS

Pancake Supper: Thursday, May 17th, 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the local VFW on Main St. A delicious community fundraiser benefiting the Westby Syttende Mai and Snowflake Royalties…join us, meet your neighbors, and support our local Royalties in Westby!

Kickoff Breakfast: Friday, May 18th, 7:00 AM – 10:00 AM located at Old Towne Inn Supper Club at 100 E. Old Town Rd.  Join Gary Gilbertson, host of the local Old Time Music Show at WVRQ AM 1360, for a “Tapping Your Toes with the Trolls” good time. Sit, relax with good friends, eat a hearty breakfast and enjoy the music by the “Norskedalen Trio”.

Music with DJ, Abby Holman: Friday, May 18th, 6:00 PM – 11:00 PM located in the Norski Music Tent on the Nordic Lanes ballfield.  Enjoy the greatest to the latest with one of the only female DJs in Northern Wisconsin!

Kickoff Fireworks: Friday, May 18th, 9:00 PM-10:00 PM located at the Industrial Park near the fire station.

ONGOING EVENTS

Syttende Mai Button and Raffle Tickets: Cash Prizes!!! Have a chance to win $500, $200, $100 or $75! Only 1000 tickets will be sold at $5.00 each and you receive a Syttende Mai collector button. Buttons with raffle tickets are located at area businesses, the information booths, and any board member.

Arts, Crafts and Commercial Tents: Saturday. May 19th from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM and Sunday, May 20th from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM located at N. Main and E. State Streets. Come support artists, crafters, and commercial vendors.

Westby Area Historical Society Window Display: Stop by Garrick Olerud’s new office at 106 W. State St to see the window full of Westby history memorabilia. Beautiful and interesting items on display that tell the history of Westby.

Troll Hunt: Join in on the annual hunt sponsored by the Connelly Law Office located at 210 S. Main Street. Cash Reward! Everyone is welcome to participate. Clues posted Friday, May 18th at 4:00 PM and Saturday, May 20th and Sunday, May 21st at noon. Hunt for little wooden trolls!

Troll Medallion Hunt: To commemorate the 50th Westby Syttende Mai, 48 troll medallions are “trolling” the town of Westby the week leading up to Syttende Mai. No clues will be posted. It is sheer luck to find one. Register your found medallion at the Syttende Mai Information booth during its open hours and claim a $5 cash prize plus keep the medallion! Medallions 49 and 50 will be given to the finders of the official Syttende Mai trolls. No reward cash prize will be given after 4 PM on May 20th. Happy hunting!

Coulee Region Rosemaler's Annual Show & Sale:  Saturday, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Sunday 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM located in the Community Center (lower level of Bekkum Library). Join our local Rosemalers in celebrating the Norwegian folk art of rosemaling, local history of rosemaling, folk music and traditional Norwegian lunch & pastries.

Coulee Region Rosemaler’s Annual Heritage Center: Saturday & Sunday from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM located in the VFW 205 N. Main St across from Bekkum Library. Stop by and enjoy learning about Nordic traditions and heritage.

Bunads: Saturday from 9:00 Am – 4:00 PM located at the Heritage Center (VFW) and the Community Center (Bekkum Library lower level) see live models with Norwegian Folk Costumes from many districts of Norway.

Westby Locker & Meats Cookout: Friday, May 18th from 11:30 AM-1:00 PM located at 406 N. Main St

Food Vendors: Friday - Sunday, located downtown next to Subway, behind Our Savior’s Church & Dr. Mary Gajewski’s Dental Office.

Lefsepolsa House: Saturday and Sunday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, corner of Main and West State Streets. Enjoy delicious lefse, a traditional soft Norwegian flatbread made with leftover potatoes, flour, butter, and milk or cream cooked on a griddle. A Syttende Mai favorite!

Norwegian Baking Demonstrations: Saturday from 9:00 AM-4:00 PM located at the Heritage Center (VFW). Experience local bakers preparing traditional Norwegian foods such as lefse, rosettes, krumkake, and other incredible edibles.

Rømmegrøt: Saturday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM and Sunday 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM at Bekkum Library lower level and Saturday 12:00 PM -4:00 PM behind Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Experience the taste of a Norwegian cream porridge delicacy while supporting Westby Syttende Mai and Our Savior’s Youth Group.

Norsemen Beer & Wine Garden: Friday, May 18th from 5 PM – 11:00 PM and Saturday, May 19th from 4 PM – 11:00 PM. Refresh your adult (21-years and older) self near the Norski Music Stage at the Nordic Lanes ballfield. Enjoy your choice of beer and wine beverages. Drink tickets are $5/wine and $3/beer. IDs and Syttende Mai button purchase required to enter the garden.

“MUST SEE” EXHIBITS & ATTRACTIONS

Westby High School Art Exhibit:  Friday, May 18th from 4:00 PM - 9:30 PM located in the Westby Area Performing Arts Center (WAPAC) Commons Area. Spend some time and see the work of local young artists.

Westby's Syttende Mai History: Saturday, March 19th 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM located at 112 S. Main St (the former Westby Bakery). See 50 years of Westby Syttende Mai History with a display of the large collection of its official buttons, photographs, and memorabilia, many items dating back to 1969. Take in displays created by Westby High School 9th grade students as they proudly share their local history projects with you! This is the 4th annual year for this free event presented by the "History Alive Project, Inc." teachers, volunteers and students. Westby's own Syttende Mai Historian will also share many artifacts spanning 50 years of its festival at the bakery.  

History Alive Project, Inc: Saturday, May 19th from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM at 218 N. Main St. Tour all 7 rooms of Westby’s oldest homes, now renovated and filled with 100s of vintage photo images and historical artifacts. Special for the 50th is 50 Years of Westby Syttende Mai display, free Norwegian troll coloring pictures for young and old plus register to win 1 of two one-time passes for the LaCrosse Co. Historical Society’s Hixon House or Riverside Museum or an 18-foot long Norsk vimpole flag banner from Norway. Drawings will be held at 3:00 PM.

Syttende Mai Car and Bike Show: Saturday, May 19th from 9 AM – 3:00 PM. Registration from 9:00 AM -11:00 AM at the Westby’s Athletic Field. Judging starts at 11:30 AM. Awards ceremony at or before 3:00 PM. Class winners must be present to receive an award.

Dregne's Book Signing: Saturday, May 19th from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at Dregne's Scandinavian Gifts. Meet and greet with Jerry Apps and Susan Apps-Bodilly, authors of “The Old Farm” or bring/purchase your favorite book by the award-winning Wisconsin author for a book signing. With more than 35 authored books, you may want to bring more than one from your collection!

Kiddie Parade: Saturday, May 19th starting at 10:00 AM located at the corner of Melby and Main St. and proceeds south on Main St. and east on Second St. Line up and judging at 9:30 AM in the Bland Clinic parking lot. Awards to the follow parade in front of the Logan Mill Red Caboose across from Old Time Assisted Living.

Kiddie Tractor Pull: Saturday, May 19th starting at 12:30 PM. Registration begins at 11:30 AM at the corner of Market and Highland Streets. Button required for One Adult for a child to participate.

Rømmegrøt Eating Contest: Saturday, May 19th at 2:00 PM located at the kid activity tent on Market St behind Subway. Two age groups (10 & under, 11-18 and adults). Entry fee: 2018 Syttende Mai Button. Prizes following the contest.

Syttende Mai Collectors Button & Princess Doll Auction: Friday, May 18th starting at 7:00 PM during the high school choral concert.

Antique Tractor Pull: Saturday, May 19th with a 12:00 PM Registration and a 1:00 PM Start located at the Industrial Park off Swiggum Rd. Food Tent sales at the event help support the Westby Syttende Mai Festival.

Royalty Tea SPECIAL INVITE ONLY:  Sunday, May 20th from 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM located at the Westby Middle School Cafeteria/Field House Entrance.

Royalty Reunion SPECIAL INVITE ONLY: Saturday, May 19th from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM located at the Westby Middle School Commons Area with special guests, Miss Wisconsin and Miss Wisconsin Teen.

Grand Syttende Mai Parade: Sunday, May 20th beginning at 1:30 PM. See map for route. Registration deadline is May 15th. 

Raffle Drawings: Sunday, May 20th 4:00 PM cash raffle drawings with the 2018 Princess and her court at the Information Booth located in front of the Connelly Law Office.

Westby Area Historical Society Activities at the Thoreson House: Saturday, May 19th from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM, 111 Bekkedal Ave (next to the Stabbur House). Tours of the Westby Area Historical Society museum, the 1892 family home of a prominent Westby lumberman, full of beautiful and important Westby historical memorabilia. Meet Grandmother of the Year, Diane Langaard and her granddaughter, Autumn, from 1:00-2:00 PM. See The 1910 diorama of downtown Westby, built by Mike Mowery, in wonderful detail using old photos, city records and property deeds. See some of the “Sweet Rides” vehicles that will be featured in our July car show event. Meet live billy goats from the “Three Billy Goats Gruff” Norwegian folk tale. Donations appreciated. Sponsored by the Westby Area Historical Society.

Westby’s Postmaster Postmark Station: Meet Westby’s postmaster, Tracy Hall-Frost, and have your letter, envelope or postcard stamped with a commemorative Westby Syttende Mai 50th Anniversary postmark. Tracy will have a table in the Heritage Center (aka VFW) from 10 AM – 4 PM. Something unique and special to celebrate Westby’s 50th Syttende Mai!

Bluff County Tale Spinners:  Saturday, May 19th from 1:00-4:00 PM at the Bekkum Library. Enjoy the Bluff County region storytellers as they spin their magical tales about Nordic lore.

SPORTING EVENTS

Beanbag Tournament: Friday, May 18th 6:00 PM start time located in the Norski Music Tent.  A double elimination tourney hosted by Nordic Lanes with payouts dependent on the number of the participants. $20/team payable at registration. Sign up your winning team by May 10th by contacting Nordic Lanes at 608-634-4000

Golf Tournament: Saturday, May 19th, 10:00 AM tee time, Big Cup Golf Tournament. Shot gun start with 18 holes, 4 people per team ($20/person). Payout. Pre-register at Snowflake Ski & Golf Club or call 608-634-3211 to enter.

Bicycle Tour - 30, 60, 100K Routes: Saturday, May 19th - Registration starts at 7:30 AM at Westby High School. Tour starts between 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM from the Westby High School. Running with the Trolls Fun Run/Walk 5K: Saturday, March 19th – Free Kids Run/Walk starting at 12:30 PM and 5K starting at 1:00 PM. Kid’s Bike Race: Sunday, May 20th - Registration 9:00 AM - 9:45 AM with races starting at 10:00 AM located at the corner of Washington St and Sunset Blvd. Age groups include 5/6, 7/8, 9/10, 11/12. Cash prizes for each age group. You will need One (1) Syttende Mai Button per family for entry.

ABOUT THE ENTERTAINERS

Westby High School Choral Concert: Friday, May 18th starting at 7:00 PM located at the Westby High School Gym. Join Music Director, Peter Engh, and the talented young people of the Westby High School Choral Group for an evening of musical entertainment for all.

Norski Music Stage:  Friday, May 18th from 6:00 PM-11:00 PM join the dance with music by DJ, Abby Holman and Saturday, May 19th enjoy live music from 5:00 PM-11:00 PM located on the Nordic Lanes ballfield.  Stop by to “Toe Tap with Trolls” and dance/listen to local bands, Ontourage, and The Couleegans. The Norsemen Beer & Wine Garden is located inside the Norski Music Tent. The party can be found on the Nordic Lanes ballfield. A Syttende Mai button purchase is required to enter the music tent and beer garden.

Michael Martin Murphy Concert: Saturday, May 19th 7:00 PM at the Westby Area Performing Arts Center (WAPAC). $20 for regular seating and $45 for premium seating which includes a private meet and greets at 6:00 PM. Tickets available May 1st at www.wapac.ludus.com. Over the past 40 years, Murphey has left an indelible mark on the American Music Landscape with hits like Geronimo's Cadillac, Cosmic Cowboy, Wildfire, Carolina In The Pines, Cherokee Fiddle, What’s Forever For, and Cowboy Logic. Concert proceeds to benefit the Westby Music Department.

Sons of Norway Dancers- Wergeland Dancers: Saturday, May 19th 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM on 1st Street near S. Main Street between Treasures on the Main and Connelly law Office. Wergeland Dancers have provided a volunteer community service to the Coulee Region for the past 47 years. Sponsored by the Sons of Norway, Wergeland Lodge in La Crosse, the dancers currently are a family folk dance group with ages from eight years old to 80!

Karaoke: Friday, March 19th & Saturday, May 19th from 9:00 PM – 1:00 AM located at local bars Nordic Lanes and Bleachers – Always a good time.

Westby High School Jazz Band:  Sunday, May 20th starting at 12:30 PM located on the steps of the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Enjoy timeless classics with our local Jazz Band and band director, Monte Dunnum before the parade.
